Gardener Battersea Health and Safety Policy

Policy statement: Gardener Battersea is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of all staff, clients and the public while delivering high-quality gardening services in Battersea and surrounding areas. This policy sets out the responsibilities, safe working practices and controls that apply to all employees, contractors and visitors involved in garden maintenance in Battersea. The goal is to prevent injury and ill health, minimise environmental harm and promote a culture of safety across every gardening project.

Scope and application: This Health and Safety policy applies to all work activities undertaken by our Battersea gardener teams, including pruning, planting, turfing, hedge cutting, tree work support, hard landscaping tasks and seasonal maintenance. It covers site risk assessment, use of powered equipment, manual handling, handling of chemicals and fuels, traffic and access management, and interaction with clients' property and utilities. All members of staff are expected to be familiar with and follow the procedures described below.

Management responsibilities: Senior management will ensure that adequate resources, training and supervision are provided and that safety performance is regularly reviewed. Line managers must complete documented risk assessments, implement safe systems of work and ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is supplied, maintained and used. The role of every Battersea gardener includes a duty to report hazards, follow safe practices and cooperate in safety reviews.

Risk assessment: Before work starts, a competent person will carry out site-specific risk assessments that identify hazards such as uneven ground, overhead services, traffic, working at height and hazardous substances. Control measures will be proportionate to the risk and documented. Where residual risk remains, additional controls, exclusion zones or the use of specialist contractors will be required. Hazardous substances (COSHH): The use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals is governed by COSHH-style controls: only authorised products are used, manufacturer instructions are followed, and proper PPE is worn. Containers are clearly labelled and stored in secure, ventilated areas. Spill kits and emergency procedures are available and staff know how to respond to accidental exposures.

Incident reporting and emergency response: All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences are reported immediately, recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence. First aid provisions are provided on site or access to trained first aiders is ensured. Emergency procedures include site evacuation, contact with emergency services, and communication with clients while maintaining privacy and safety. Regular drills and reviews keep responses effective.
