Gardener Battersea Health and Safety Policy

Gardener tending to plants with tools Policy statement: Gardener Battersea is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of all staff, clients and the public while delivering high-quality gardening services in Battersea and surrounding areas. This policy sets out the responsibilities, safe working practices and controls that apply to all employees, contractors and visitors involved in garden maintenance in Battersea. The goal is to prevent injury and ill health, minimise environmental harm and promote a culture of safety across every gardening project.

Scope and application: This Health and Safety policy applies to all work activities undertaken by our Battersea gardener teams, including pruning, planting, turfing, hedge cutting, tree work support, hard landscaping tasks and seasonal maintenance. It covers site risk assessment, use of powered equipment, manual handling, handling of chemicals and fuels, traffic and access management, and interaction with clients' property and utilities. All members of staff are expected to be familiar with and follow the procedures described below.

Garden maintenance team assessing site Management responsibilities: Senior management will ensure that adequate resources, training and supervision are provided and that safety performance is regularly reviewed. Line managers must complete documented risk assessments, implement safe systems of work and ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is supplied, maintained and used. The role of every Battersea gardener includes a duty to report hazards, follow safe practices and cooperate in safety reviews.

Risk assessment and safe systems

Risk assessment: Before work starts, a competent person will carry out site-specific risk assessments that identify hazards such as uneven ground, overhead services, traffic, working at height and hazardous substances. Control measures will be proportionate to the risk and documented. Where residual risk remains, additional controls, exclusion zones or the use of specialist contractors will be required. These assessments form the basis for operational permits and client briefings.

Training session for gardeners on equipment use Training and competence: Gardener in Battersea staff will receive induction training, equipment-specific instruction and periodic refresher courses. Training covers safe operation of mowers, strimmers, chainsaws, shears and powered tools, manual handling techniques, COSHH awareness for pesticides and fertilizers, and emergency first aid. Records of training and competency checks are maintained for all team members.

Work equipment and PPE: All tools and machinery will be regularly inspected, maintained and used only by competent personnel. Mandatory PPE includes protective gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, steel-toe boots and appropriate head protection for tree work. Equipment guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed. Fuel and lubricants are stored safely and transferred with spill controls in place.

Operational safety

Manual handling and ergonomics: Tasks that involve lifting, carrying or prolonged awkward postures are assessed and, where possible, mechanical aids or team lifts are used. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to report any musculoskeletal issues early. Work schedules are planned to avoid repetitive strain and to include adequate rest periods.

Safe handling of garden chemicals in storage Hazardous substances (COSHH): The use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals is governed by COSHH-style controls: only authorised products are used, manufacturer instructions are followed, and proper PPE is worn. Containers are clearly labelled and stored in secure, ventilated areas. Spill kits and emergency procedures are available and staff know how to respond to accidental exposures.

First aid kit and emergency procedures displayed on site Incident reporting and emergency response: All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences are reported immediately, recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence. First aid provisions are provided on site or access to trained first aiders is ensured. Emergency procedures include site evacuation, contact with emergency services, and communication with clients while maintaining privacy and safety. Regular drills and reviews keep responses effective.

Monitoring, review and continuous improvement: The effectiveness of this policy is monitored through site inspections, safety audits, toolbox talks and feedback from staff. Performance indicators such as near-miss frequency, accident rates and completion of training are reviewed at management meetings. The policy is formally reviewed at least annually and when there are changes to work practices, equipment or regulations.

Contractors and client engagement: Third-party contractors working alongside our teams must comply with this policy and produce evidence of their competence, insurance and safe systems. Clients are informed of relevant risks and asked to provide access information, particularly where shared site access or utilities are present. Communication before and during work helps maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Environmental and public protection: Planting and waste management practices prioritise environmental protection. Green waste is disposed of responsibly and fuel or chemical spills are prevented through secure storage and handling. Work near public footpaths and roads is planned to minimise disruption and protect pedestrians. Traffic management measures such as signage, cones and spotters are used where necessary.

Commitment: This Health and Safety policy reflects the commitment of Gardener Battersea and our gardening services in Battersea to create safe, healthy and sustainable working conditions. All employees, contractors and visitors are required to uphold these standards. By embedding safety into everyday practices we ensure reliable services, protect people and preserve the environment.

Review date: This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as required to reflect operational changes or lessons learned. All staff will be informed of revisions and trained as necessary to maintain ongoing compliance with our safety objectives.
